Outdoor Channel and Time Warner Cable Partner for NYC Conservation Effort
America’s Leader in Outdoor TV Hosts Third Annual Pouch Camp Event Benefiting the Boy Scouts of America
WHO: HYPERLINK "http://www.outdoorchannel.com/ConservationOutdoorChannelCorps.aspx?id=10045" Outdoor Channel Corps, a philanthropic program created by Outdoor Channel, America’s leader in outdoor TV, which aims to restore and improve public lands and spaces in order to ensure that the outdoor lifestyle thrives in communities across America; HYPERLINK "http://www.timewarnercable.com/nynj/?divhome=1&linkid=0" Time Warner Cable; and the HYPERLINK "http://www.scouting.org/" Boy Scouts of America.
WHAT: Join the Staten Island, New York community as they come together for a third year to clean up the HYPERLINK "http://www.pouchcamp.org/" William H. Pouch Scout Camp (Pouch Camp) – a privately owned Boy Scout camp in the heart of the publicly owned HYPERLINK "http://www.nycgovparks.org/park-features/virtual-tours/greenbelt" Greenbelt (NYC Park). Stretching across 143 acres, the camp recently received funding from the Harbor Estuary Fund, administered by the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey, Staten Island Borough President James Molinaro, Councilman Vincent Ignizio (R-South Shore) and Councilman James Oddo (R-Mid-Island) to preserve 44 acres of land, which includes miles of hiking trails, a gorgeous 17-acre lake and surrounding waterfront.
This year’s event will also include an appearance by David Johansen, also known as Buster Poindexter, who is most famous for his 1982 hit single “Hot Hot Hot.” A native of Staten Island, Johansen was a member of the Boy Scouts of America and participated in scouting activities at Pouch Camp as a youth.
WHY: As New York City’s only scout camp, Pouch Camp is an integral part of the area’s scouting community. Last year, the event successfully removed invasive species throughout the camp grounds, and this activity will also be the primary focus of this year’s initiative, as an effort to keep Pouch Camp in top condition for the scouts, New York City youth and other visitors. Moreover, volunteers will plant saplings along the grounds in support the HYPERLINK "http://www.nycgovparks.org/" \t "_blank" City of New York’s Parks & Recreation department’s HYPERLINK "http://www.milliontreesnyc.org/html/home/home.shtml" MillionTreesNYC initiative, a sustainability project set forth under Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg with the goal of planting one million trees across New York City by the year 2017.
Members of the Committee to Save Pouch Camp will be available to discuss the preservation efforts. Free “Save Pouch” lawns signs will also be available for pick-up as well as the Committee's brochure.
Through partnerships with organizations such as the Boy Scouts and Time Warner Cable, Outdoor Channel aims to mobilize local outdoor enthusiasts and make lasting impacts on the communities it serves across the U.S. Time Warner Cable is looking to raise awareness about conservation in Staten Island through its Connect A Million Minds initiative which exposes young people to the wonders of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).
Outdoor Channel HD is available to area residents of Staten Island, NY through Time Warner Cable on Channel 480. Time Warner Cable’s New York City service area includes Manhattan, Queens, Staten Island and western Brooklyn, Mt. Vernon, NY, as well as Bergen and Hudson Counties in New Jersey.

AGREEMENT REACHED TO SAVE POUCH CAMP - READ THE SI ADVANCE STORY HERE (JULY, 2011)
Funding Statement by the Committee to Save Pouch Camp
This site was started to create a place we, concerned Scouts and residents of Staten Island and New York City, could come to get informed and get involved in saving Pouch Camp.
Through organization and awareness, we can save Pouch Camp - we have to. Pouch Camp has touched the lives of countless young people throughout the years. Maybe you have hiked in Pouch, camped in a cabin or fished in Lake Ohrbach. Maybe you just drove by Pouch Camp and remember a Staten Island that was greener and never thought this property could be sold to developers.
Since the Committee to Save Pouch Camp organized in 2010, the Committee has held numerous rallies, community events, fundraisers and lawn sign drives. With the announcement of a deal to save Pouch Camp by the GNYC-BSA and the Trust for Public Land, we must focus now, more than ever, to see this preservation plan become a reality.
Please suggest content that should appear on this site and get (and stay) involved. Together, we can save Pouch Camp!
